Prayer Light: 4.19 dizaine

photo credit: http://www.themourners.org/mourners/mourner_62.htmlDizaine is a French word meaning “a group of ten.” It’s like our word dozen, “a group of twelve.” But it’s also an estimating word, so it also signifies “about 10.” As a noun in this case, it’s a short version of the rosary, which is made up of five tens, each representing prayers to be repeated, like the “Our Father.”

In a full rope there are pause beads between the tens. Roman Catholics and Orthodox traditions use prayer beads or ropes as a tool for meditation. In the Eastern tradition, breath prayers are often repeated at each bead. The specific number of beads prevents a person from obsessing about the count. The tactile feel of the beads acts as biofeedback to help a person “center down,” as Quakers would say. You can have a look at sculptures carved with dizaines here.

Show us what you use or do to help you center down into God’s presence. See Prayer Light for submission instructions.
